What happens to the penis as you age? Does girth increase or decrease as you age. Well for once we have some good news about aging. The penis does get smaller or shrink as we age. It’s not all good news there are definably some changes with the body as we age that affect how the penis looks and functions.
Anatomy and Physiology 101
Before discussing the impact of age on the penis lets go over the basic anatomy of the penis. This helps us understand what happens to the penis as we age it also helps us understand treatments that rejuvenate the penis. The penis consists of three main components:
1. Corpora Cavernosa: These are two cylindrical bodies that run along the top of the penis. These are composed of spongy tissue. This tissue fills with blood and becomes firm when you are excited. This is the how you how an erection and during an erection. When these are damaged or the blood supply leading to them this is one of the causes of ED.
2. Corpus Spongiosum: This is a single cylindrical body like the Corpora Cavernosa but this runs along the bottom of the penis, surrounding the urethra. It also fills with blood during an erection but to a lesser extent than the corpora cavernosa.
3. Tunica Albuginea: This fibrous tissue surrounding the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum, providing structural support.
Think of the corpora cavernosa and the corpus spongiosum as a pair of water balloons wrapped in a fabric tube. As these balloons fill up with water (or blood in this case), they expand and become firmer, pressing against the walls of the tube.

The Penis and Age
Several factors can influence changes in penile size and girth as men age. Below are a list of common changes that affect the penis as we age.
1. Weight Gain
As we age, we have a strong tendency to gain weight. That middle age belly leads to fat accumulating around the pubic bone. The penis gets swallowed by this fat and looks but is not actually shorter.
2. ED
Erectile disfunction is more common as we age, diabetes, vascular disease, smoking, some medications all increase the risk for ED. Although ED does not actually make the penis smaller it makes it seem smaller to the affected person. Also, as testosterone declines with age you get fewer erections and the quality of those erections may suffer. They may not be as firm so seem smaller
3. Skin Quality
As we age our skin becomes less elastic, it hangs more and does not snap back like it used to. This loose skin makes the penis look wrinkled and gives the appearance of volume loss. When you see the sagging skin, it makes you think volume has been lost.
How Do I Keep My Penis Young?
Anything that is good for your heart is good for your penis. Regular exercise keeps the blood vessels flexible and keeps the blood flowing. It also helps prevent diseases like diabetes that impact the health of the penis. A healthy diet, lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins also protect your health and the health of your penis. Testosterone replacement will not do anything for the size of your penis but having healthy testosterone levels will help maintain your sex drive, erection quality and it is also good for your skin health.
The worst thing you can do for the health of your penis is smoke (but you know that already, right?!) Smoking dramatically increases the risk if ED, it also makes your skin sag making your penis look prematurely old.
Does Girth Increase with Age?
No sadly not. But fortunately, it doesn’t really get smaller either. It mainly just looks smaller. as they age. This reduction is usually due to the factors discussed above, such as decreased testosterone levels, reduced blood flow, and changes in connective tissue elasticity. So, what is the best way to rejuvenate your penis?
