Non-surgical penile enhancement is minimally invasive and extremely safe, the procedure uses dermal fillers injected along the shaft of the penis to increase the thickness or girth of the penis. Over three million people have fillers injected each year and although the majority of these are injected in the face the sheer number of treatments gives you some idea of the safety of procedure. Even though the procedure is very safe complications can and do happen. It is important to know the risks or possible side effects before you are treated.
Common Side Effect
At GMG we use two types of fillers, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Side effects with these fillers are very uncommon. A recent review demonstrated that HA fillers have a complication rate of less than 2 per 1000 treatments, that is .2%.
Swelling and Bruising
Swelling and bruising are the most common side effects and are more common as you do higher volumes of filler. These symptoms resolve or go away in a few days to a week. Occasionally swelling and bruising can last 2-3 weeks but this is rare.
Discomfort and Tenderness
Mild discomfort and tenderness are normal after the procedure. It generally lasts a few days and is easily treated with Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Pain or tenderness that last longer than a couple days, gets worse several days post procedure or requires anything more than OTC pain relievers should be reported immediately to Dr. Sullivan.

Less Common Side Effects
Lumps and Nodules
Small lumps or bumps may form under the skin at the injection sites. This is more likely with Volux given its thickness and high G prime. The lumpy, bumpys as Dr. Sullivan calls them are normal for the first 2-3 weeks. Any lumps or bumps beyond that period will be treated at the follow up visit.
Allergic Reactions
Although rare, allergic reactions to dermal fillers can occur. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, itching. Allergic reactions are generally easily treated
Serious Side Effects
Infection
Infection is a rare but serious risk associated with any injectable procedure. At GMG we try to reduce this risk by pre-medicating with antibiotics and with a careful post treatment regimen. Signs of infection include increased redness, swelling, warmth, and/or discharge.
Vascular Complications
Injection of the filler into a blood vessel can lead to vascular occlusion or blockage. This blockage can result tissue damage, necrosis or tissue death. Fortunately, the important blood vessels and nerves of the penis are protected by a tough layer of tissue called fascia which makes accidental injection there difficult. Additionally, Dr. Sullivan is aware of the anatomy of the penis and carefully avoids this area during treatment.
Filler Migration
Many patients are concerned about possible filler migration. It is possible for filler to move or migrate from where it was placed. However, the most filler can move is perhaps a ¼ inch. It does not move longer distances as some patients are worried about. Following our aftercare instructions greatly reduces migration.
What Are Potential Side Effects?
Dermal fillers are extremely safe as evidenced by millions of successful treatments. Treatment of the penis is off label and because it involves larger volumes than on label treatments it may carry potentially more risk. However, overall enhancement with dermal fillers is still very safe and certainly safer than surgical alternatives. It’s important to understand that all medical procedures have risk. By choosing Dr. Sullivan at GetMoreGirth you are decreasing you risk by using a Board-Certified physician with years of experience. Following aftercare instructions, contacting the office with any concerns and making your follow-up appointments, also minimize these risks and ensures a smooth recovery.
